Afi + Associates and Root Division are teaming up for an evening of artwork, music, and light refreshments in South Beach, SF. The Night/Light exhibition features paintings, drawings, photography, and video art by 12 Root Division Resident Artists and Affiliates. The work in the exhibition ties together these various artists' approaches to the themes of light, night skies, astronomy, and illumination. As we come out of the darker part of the calendar year, the artwork explores both the peaceful and invigorating aspects surrounding Bay Area nightfall.

Enjoy music and tasty nibbles while immersing yourself in the creations of our artists. Come discover this delightful neighborhood while supporting local artists and art education in San Francisco. The event is free and open to the public, but donations will be gladly accepted to support Root Division's programs.

As a part of the community, it is important to Afi + Associates to help enrich the lives of those around us. By partnering with Root Division, our hope is to promote creativity & constructive avenues for expression. It is our mutual goal to ensure the survival of community programs that nourish & enrich our neighborhoods.

About Marika Berlind:
Combining her love and knowledge of astronomy, mathematics, and art, Marika Berlind’s work features captivating interpretations of astrophysical-cosmological concepts, in order to reveal their visual, theoretical, and philosophical implications. “I wish to provide an alternate means by which to explore science, through a momentary visual experience of ‘living in the universe’ ” she explains. She is interested in issues of ‘vastness’, ‘the infinite’, ‘chaos’, ‘multidimensionality’, ‘parallel spaces’, and the ‘relative role of Earth and human consciousness within the universe’. She hopes to open a door for the questioning of our role as observers in our formation of scientific ‘truth’.
Her recent body of work titled Another Universe covers four themes: ‘Strings’(multi-dimensional energy units); ‘Holes’(time-distorting space regions), ‘Scapes’(imaginary scapes between here and alien worlds) and ‘Folds’(entangled layers of space). These range from a focus on the visual to a focus on the theoretical, and all feature a wonderful sense of light, color, motion and concept, as she constantly challenges the viewer to go beyond their normal limits of perception. Berlind received her BA from Princeton and her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and she is now located in San Francisco, California.
